White Chocolate and Matcha Hot Cocoa
Looking for something sweet with a little caffeine kick (but want something other than coffee)? Then White Chocolate and Matcha Hot Cocoa might be the drink for you! Not only does this drink have a festive minty-green color to it, but it’s a great alternative to the beverages you’d usually expect around the holidays.
For this recipe you will need:
¼ cup white chocolate chips
2 cups milk (or unsweetened milk substitute)
2 teaspoons matcha
1 cup hot water
First, melt the white chocolate with ½ cup of milk, stirring until it’s smooth and evenly mixed. Then add the remaining milk. Remove this from heat and set aside.
Sift the matcha into 1 cup hot water, and whisk with it a hand-held frother or bamboo whisk until everything is combined and a nice froth has formed.
Mix the matcha water and the melted chocolate mixtures together and then pour into mugs. For added flair, serve these drinks in clear glass mugs and use a hand frother to get a nice foam to form on the top of each glass. Serves 2.
Peppermint Patty Coffee
Peppermint Patty Coffee is the perfect combination of coffee meets mint chocolate, when both flavors are there but neither is overpowering. And this recipe is so simple and easy to make, it’s perfect for those fast-paced mornings when you’re rushing to get your day started but still want to get into the holiday spirit.
Gather these ingredients (makes one cup):
8 ounces brewed coffee (and you can add even more depth to your drink by using a flavored coffee blend)
2 tablespoons sweetened (or unsweetened) cocoa powder
½ teaspoon peppermint extract
2 teaspoons sugar
2 ounces of milk (or milk substitutes)
Simply put all the dry ingredients into the bottom of the mug and pour in your hot coffee. Stir until the sugar and cocoa are dissolved. Then add in the peppermint extract and milk. Stir, and enjoy!
This can also make a fun iced drink: after you follow the recipe, pour the drink into a pitcher and let it sit in the refrigerator an hour or two. When you are ready to drink it, pour over ice, stirring briefly to ensure everything is mixed thoroughly.
Mulled Cider is a cold-weather classic. While there are numerous variations, we suggest this spicy take. The extra zest is just enough to warm you up and put you in the holiday spirit.
You will need:
1 gallon apple cider or unfiltered apple juice
10 whole cloves
½ teaspoon whole black peppercorns (crush lightly right before you are ready to use them)
2 strips orange peel, about 2 inches long
6 dried allspice berries
4 heads star anise
1 cinnamon stick
1 (1-inch) piece fresh ginger, thinly sliced
Combine all of the ingredients in a large pot over medium-high heat. Bring the pot to a boil.
Reduce the heat to medium and simmer for 10 minutes. Then remove the pot from the heat and let everything steep for 10 more minutes before serving.
Serve your hot cider in heatproof mugs and enjoy! The black pepper will add a delightful yet surprising kick to your holiday classic.
